Donna Campbell Smith's first book, Pale as the Moon, is the story of a Paspatank girl and her bond with a wild horse. Set on Coastal North Carolina in the 1500s, this book was recommended by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and selected by Renaissance Learning's Accelerated Reader program.

Donna has since released two more historical fiction novels for young readers, An Independent Spirit, based on the legend of Betsy Dowdy, and Bear Song, a sequel to Pale as the Moon. She also has three horse books written for a general audience published by The Lyons Press: The Book of Donkeys, The Book of Miniature Horses, The Book of Draft Horses and The Book of Mules.
